Day off for both the wife and I. Decided to drive along the beach for a change, we're more downtown people. Anyway if one can judge the local tourist economy by checking out parking lots and walking around the places -people are hitting the cheap places big time. Figure that a Thursday would show more out of towners rather than locals taking a weekend at a hotel.
Of the big four just west of us only the Don Cesar seemed to have its normal crowd.

The Grand Plaza. The old Hilton of years back with the revolving restaurant/bar -go for the view, not the food, seemed to be down a bit.

The Tradewinds and Sirata resorts could be used as a a tropical setting for the Overlook Hotel in a remake of Stephen King's The Shining.

If you're going to be down here this summer book with the hotel directly and push hard for a cheap rate.
How is it in the rest of the country?

No. Thank goodness. After living in HI I had my fill of black socks with sandals, husbands & wives wearing the same outfits and rental cars clogging exit ramps. Though, drunk coeds with poor impulse control and low self esteem was redeeming.

We have scads of touristy stuff, all very close by. But I've been so busy at work, I haven't paid any attention to this.

I live close to Gettysburg which has quite a few tourist. Carlisle productions as well, which clogs all of our woefully lame roadways.

Yes....yes I do.
I try to avoid the hot spots of tourist activity but sometimes it can't be avoided. there's nothing more nauseating than seeing a family decked out in matching white I <3 NY shirts.
this neat little gimmick should bring in a larger amount of tourists this summer
that Gates exhibit in Central Park was a huge hit

We sort of get tourists here in Houston.
Okay, not really... Actually we get all the money that people would spend on a vacation if it weren't all going to gasoline. Heheheheheheheh...

I thought the tourists in Houston were on "vacation" from New Orleans?

I used to have a T-Shirt: "Why is it called TOURIST SEASON if we can't shoot them?"
And we don't just have tourists...
We have SUMMER PEOPLE.
Plus we have the Sweet Corn Festival, which is actually surprisingly fun. Unfortunately, if you don't use police tape or something to mark off your property; the visitors will not only park on your lawn, they will tell you quite angrily that they have the RIGHT to do so.
Knowing my temper, I make certain to block off my property.
I don't want to make the front page. AGAIN.

I thought you said earlier that you didnt have a problem going back to jail....
*teasing you*
To stay on-topic, yes, we have tourists. Every Friday, there is an AIT class that graduates. I work in a museum, so we do benefit. However, I am trying to track the flow of tourists at Jamestown and such, to take my out-of-town guests so I have to deal with a few people as possible. The older I get, the more inclined I am to tell the brat at the next table that if he throws poi one more time, I am going to shove it up his nose, and will very likely use my elbow to do so.

Yes, Shanghai is very popular with tourists, both domestic and international. I usually avoid tourist areas like the plague, especially on 'Golden Week' holidays (Labour Day - May 1st, National Day - October 1st, and Chinese New Year) because they're just crawling with people.
Thankfully I live in an area of Shanghai that is not close to the major tourist attractions, which keeps the number of people down a little bit. ![]()

I work in Silver Spring, Maryland, which is situated at the North point of Washington D.C. Driving into work one morning, I found myself staring at a couple, aged in their 50's, wearing Hawaiian shirts, shorts, cameras, fanny packs, and hats. I thought to myself, "this is a work day," and, "what's to see in Silver Spring?" Of course, I don't think too quickly in the morning. They were on their way to the Metro (subway) which will take them right down to the Mall where all the monuments and museums are. Still, it was a bit surreal. I forgot I live so close to one of the world's top tourist destinations, the Capitol of the "Free World."
