That's what I was worried about. Found out that windstars seem to grenade a transmission around 100k miles as well. Are all 90s era ford crap with transmissions? What about a ford contour? I drove one of those years ago and really liked it, found a 99 and a 2000 in the price range.... as well as dodge intrepid and the aforementioned explorer.

I know this is probably not applicable to anyone else, but my brother (landscaper and farmer) needed a real work truck so they sold his old Blazer and her newish (2005-6) Outback and bought a 2004 longbed F250 Powerstroke Dually for him and a 1998 Golf 2.0 for her.
Before you laugh at the Golf, it only has 60k miles, is immaculate, and they only paid $2800 for it.
p.s. His truck is beastly, but it's about as bad on gas as the Blazer was so he also just bought a 250cc Ninja.

That's really not a bad suggestion.
My Mk3 was very reliable (~128,000 trouble free miles).
They're easy to work on, too. The current owner commented on how
