I used to work 15 minutes from their brewery/restaurant.
The whole company would go down on Fridays to have lunch, shoot pool and drink fresh beer.
Awesome.
IPAs still suck.

Thanks for the Brickhouse tip, I'll check it out when I get ITP at some point. Us country folk are scared of the high culture and various colours of people that can be found there... especially Decatur... sheesh, you bring your gat?

Well, Decatur, Inman Park, and Grant Park are all pretty nancy these days. Mostly just bars occupied by Emory hippies. I'd bring a glock to decatur like I'd bring one to buckhead. I'd say overall, the dec has been cleaned up pretty well.

Someone at Sam Adams needs to be shot. Right away. Here's why...
Quick backstory...I hate my job, need a new one real bad and real soon. To force myself to put a serious effort into job searching, I've made it a routine to go to a nearby Irish bar after work w/ my laptop where I steal a nearby wireless signal and apply for various positions while swilling Sam Adams Summer Ales. Seems like a silly idea, but it's been working. Got a couple interviews next week. Plus, you should see how cool I look sitting amongst the Manhattan after-work crowd on 55th St. & 8th Ave on my laptop, right at the middle of the bar.
Anywho, I sat down around 6:30, and my bartender friend tells me that promo girls for Sam Adams would be at the bar around 7:30 doing what hot little promo girls do. He knows what a big fan of the Sammy I am (seasonals on tap are a glorious thing) so he made sure one of the girls made it my way. A little while ago I was approached by a lil cutie who had two small Sam Adams cups. One was a lighter color, similar to that of the Summer Ale I'm drinking, the other resembled a stout or a porter. So, she puts them down next to me, gives me a free bottle opener key chain, and hands me a survey card. I'm supposed to drink them both and vote for which I think is the best. The one that gets the most votes in their nationwide campaign, gets made into a Sam Adams brew. Also, once I finish this little taste test, she promised to buy me a Sam Summer from the bar.
I start with the lighter one and down almost the entire thing. I refrained from gulping it all down to savor the flavor.....BIG mistake! I quickly learned what I was dealing with and consulted the card she gave me. I was drinking a Blackberry Wheat Beer. I finished what was left, tried not to gag, and focused my attention to the darkie sitting there. After that ghastly experience (i've had their Cherry Wheat Beer, it's not bad after half a bottle, but it gets pretty gross after that) I checked to see what I was in store for next. Oh boy....
It was a coffee beer. No clue if it's actually caffeinated or not but right away I knew I was in for trouble. I took a moderate gulp, about a 1/3 of the little cup and that was all I could stand. Last thing I need for my sexy black Macbook here is me vomiting up 3 different beers and my fried shrimp lunch on it. I returned my attention to the promo girl and asked her what do I do since both beers make me want to throw up. She told me to write "neither" in between the two choices and I still got my free Sam Summer Ale on tap.
Sam Adams, you make some awesome fucking beer. Most of the Sam collection is pretty good stuff. But please, for the love of god, quit while you're ahead!!!

Tomorrow is cask night at my local brewpup. Chipotle (smoked jalapeno) Pale ale. From what I understand, it's becoming a popular craft brew. Sounds disgusting to me though. I will try it and report back.
New beers tried last friday:
- Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA (B-)
- Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale (C-)
- Brugge Zot Dubbel (A-)

You've never had a coffee stout or a coffee porter before?
It's time to get out and explore beer.
and FYI, Sam Adams is a shitty brewery that makes shitty beer in my opinion

I've had a couple chipotle pale home brews and while they aren't bad, they aren't something I'd drink all day.
The idea of one on cask is kind of gross though. I think they benefit from the carbonation and the chill of the traditional tap beer.

As far as Macro beers go, SA is pretty damn good. Which of these would you rather drink:
Bud
Coors
Miller
SA
Heineken
Corona

exactly
for a "mainstream" brewing company they make some pretty good beers. i mostly refer to their seasonals since that's pretty much the only SA I drink
and yes, I've heard a little bit about coffee stouts but that still doesn't change my opinion. maybe there's a microbrew out there that makes one that won't make me want to vomit, but i'm still not a fan of the idea of introducing the flavor of coffee to my beer.

Terrapin makes an oatmeal coffee stout that I think is pretty good. It's quite sweet, almost a dessert beer. I've been telling myself to make one for a while.

It actually wasn't bad. It had a very subtle, spicy flavor but all in all I didn't consider it a very spicy beer at all. It was a mix between a golden ale and an ipa, but had no hoppy flavor whatsoever. I could have used a bit more character, perhaps it needed to be aged longer. I think I would try it again.
I have a dessert beverage planned for later tonight... a Lindemans Framboise Lambic and vanilla ice cream float.

We're still talking about beer, right? ![]()
Beer this weekend was limited to Heineken, unfortunately.
Whenever we go to the in-laws, the FIL grabs a couple Heineken
as soon as we sit down. It's like this every visit.
Out of respect, I thank him & refrain from telling him it tastes like
freshly flattened skunk.

BTW, I picked this up from the local grocier this weekend:
Haven't poured one yet, but I have a feeling I'll like it.

We're definitely still talking about beer.
Lambics make pretty good beer floats, always a good dessert.

Lindeman's Framboise is my favorite dessert beer.
Of course, Peche is pretty good, too.
Ever try a Kwak?

It was unremarkably average. (C+)
Poured nice & dark, flat head, smelled like a good stout should, but ultimately
was lacking in character. Alcohol content is high & it's easy to drink so beware.
Not a -bad- stout but @ $10.00/ 4 pack, there are better offerings.

My FIL bought a mini-keg of Heineken a few weeks ago and astonishingly, it was half decent. It tasted very fresh out of the keg, like the Heineken I had in Italy. I think it's she shipping that messes them up.

Those mini kegs -are- much better.
The FIL got one as a gift & used it on the 4th.
It's not a big green bottle. Maybe that helps.
