Moment of truth time.
For me, at least, his choice will go a long long way to determining if I can stand the stench long enough to pull the lever for him. Cheney is an abberation - whoever gets picked as veep is almost sure to be the presumed Pub nominee in 4-8 years. It would make McCain's bullshit regarding immigration, global warming and all the rest go down a -lot- easier if I could feel that I was pre-voting for a -decent- Pub candidate 4-8 years early.
Who I hope for:
Fred!, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal
Who he'll probably f*ck us up the ass with:
Christie Whitman, Joe Lieberman, Mike Huckabee

The ass fucking choices sound awful.

I'll bet a whole dollar it will be Mitt Romney.

Sigh. Yeah, mebbe Romney too. As I posted in the thread I linked to, after listing who I hope for and who we'll probably wind up with:
Who doesn't change anything for me either way: Romney. If that's his pick, I guess I'll just wait till election day, get REALLY hammered, and if under the influence I wind up going and pulling the lever for him, at least I'm unlikely to remember it.
In addition, I think he would probably lose the election for McCain.

This is the part of the political season where I withdraw. The hours upon hours of speculating is pointlessly draining. I'm going to hide under a rock until it's over.

No, actually, though the choices are distasteful in the extreme, there are still issues at stake that make this, like every election, worth fighting for.
Just remember, we're not exactly fighting for a particular candidate choice this time, but rather a party platform that can bring with it some serious and disasterous consequences if chosen wrong.
For McCain -- he is not even on my top 10 list as a candidate -- but he's what we have on the Republican ticket. He will stand for a few things that Obama will not -- those few things are worth the fight on his behalf, even if I can't stomach him as a candidate. THAT is the picture that we need to hold as we move forward in this race.
I suggest several "big picture" questions, such as the selection of Supreme Court justices (of which at least 2 will be in the first couple of years, and a likely third choice by the end of the first term), handling of foreign policy (which is no place for bleeding hearts that want nothing more than appeasement), handling of the military (O's choice is to reduce our military force by 90% -- effectively saying "Come and get us..."), and the ultimate size and roll of government (O promises to "help" us run our lives -- that does not sound attractive to me at all).
Other issues will fall to the side during this campaign, gun control, abortion, domestic policy, etc., as both candidates are somewhat close in that regard, and at the end of the day, there would not be much difference - -some, yes -- but major, no.
Additionally, whichever candidate is elected will likely also effect the makeup of Congress. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I dred the most liberal candidate in America's history going into office with a super-majority in Congress to back him up. That equates (IMO) to a bloodless coup of America. We WILL get change if that happens -- but I'm not sure that any of us really wants that sort of change...

I think McCain is dead meat on the toilet seat. I see the lack of excitement from within his own party and compare it to the excitement that BHO has generated in his, and I'm almost completely convinced that the former doesn't stand a chance. Even foreign leaders are courting Obama like his victory is a forgone conclusion.
Or maybe I need to cut back on the NPR. ![]()

NPR, that last bastion of American free thinkers...
I'd not equate excitement with substance. I get excited when I get an ice cream cone, but that doesn't last very long -- at the best, it gives me a rush for a few moments, at the worst, it drips on my pants and makes me look... well, not good. (Come to think about it, ice cream makes me look not good no matter what, but I digress...).
The poll numers are dropping for Obama, even in the absence of a strong McCain presence. Largely, as more and more of O's disciples discover that their messiah has flaws, they start wondering if he is the one. Now if only Elton John would come and sing pinball wizard for him, perhaps he would regain some trust in his blindfolded and deafened flock...
I can't WAIT for the implications of Obama's military strategy to sink in... That ought to be fun to watch. An exodus of biblical proportions! Mandatory unpaid civilian armed forces -- yup, that's gonna go over with the young crowd. (Pssst... Its called the DRAFT!)

We assumed you'd been doing that already.
I don't know how inevitable Obama is. Despite the adoring coverage he gets the veneer is starting to dull a bit. A big asset for him aside from the 90% of black voters who he'll easily get is obviously affluent white voters who were enamored by his charm, eloquence and hopeful changiness® and changy hopefulness®. I know some of these voters who channeled their disenchantment with the current state into an affection for BarryO. Now that Hillary (possibly a real reason they liked him so much - he was good for putting a positive spin on their distaste for her) is out of the way - they're starting to think about how he'll impact their wallet/tax return, how little experience he has and are seeing (when allowed by the media) his gaffes and starting to get the picture that he talks a lot while saying little and essentially is a bumper sticker with big ears and good shoes. They like the idea of voting for a black candidate - or are afraid that in some dark recess of their heart they're a racist if they don't, but on election day the curtain closes.
His lack of substance on a number of issues should be easy to highlight. He has a stream of silly blunders like Brandenburg Gate-gate and he stammers like a kid caught abusing himself when he is off script and asked actual tough questions (why would you raise cap gains taxes....) but because nobody wants to be the "racist" who challenges him - even late night comics are afraid of the guy - he gets passes. But I think that can last only so long.
Obviously everything I wrote could be wrong - and speculating about November in July is about as useful as watching porn with your hands tied behind your back - but I don't think BarryO is by any means a lock.

Obama's veneer might be wearing thin, but McCain doesn't even have any veneer left. I suspect that the election will ultimately be a war of attrition with the winner being whoever manages the most breadcrumbs. Whether or not you believe that McCain has more substance (or whether his substance is any good) is debatable. I see lots and lots of Republicans staying home and trying to batten down the hatches for a minimum 4 year Obama reign, and hoping for some better choices in 2012.

If this isn't reason enough to vote for Palin:
Conservative Republicans already do enough damage to our environment but Sarah Palin is much worse and she is on a mission to exterminate wildlife in Alaska.

I think it's clear that what a number of conservatives view as worst-case scenarios are definitely under consideration.
Don't read it if you're in a good mood.

I just heard Joe Lieberman a few hours ago.
Offline
What matters now, they say, is the larger electorate. A choice of Lieberman, I've been told, would give McCain back his maverick status, reach out to disaffected Democrats and independents, and remove the argument that a McCain administration would be a third term for George W. Bush.
Considering Lieberman's near identical stance on Iraq & the WOT to GWB's,
this doesn't make much sense.
Isn't the Iraq "quagmire" the main reason why Bush is such a "failure"?

To counter McCain/Lieberman the Dems could go Obama/Chafee.
He's already endorsed the Big O for President.
