Given that hurricanes are essentially low pressure weather systems, sucking is technically accurate.

Yeah, the wife and i packed the kid up and headed to my parents house about an hour up the coast. We boarded up everythign yesterday and were about to head to the texas hill country this morning when we checked the weather and the path had moved to Port Lavaca, by the end of the day we it was headed to Houston. So now we're staying. But on the bright side Texas A&M Kingsville and the Credit Union I work for closed for the duration so i've gotten a de facto 4 day weekend.

I took my 89 year old aunt to lunch on Pensacola Beach today, we ate at a beach bar on the Gulf and watched the 20' waves break on the fishing pier. Pretty damn impressive for a storm that's 346 miles away. (http://www.stormpulse.com/)
I damn sure wouldn't want to be anywhere on the Tx/La coast from Galveston to Cameron, LA. I'm hearing that they're in for 20' of storm surge. Not too tasty...

Best of luck to those in the storm!!

Well, I'm gonna try to post updates throughout the day tomorrow. By sundown tomorrow, who knows?... I might be offline for a while.
There's a chance that I might have my kids here along with Jill, her sister, and her dog. This would be a technical violation of the divorce decree since we're not allowed to have unmarried, non-related members of the opposite sex overnight with the kids present. The X had some surgery today and I suspect that she might not be up to taking the kids tomorrow.
The next couple of days could be very interesting...

When you boarded up ---do you have holes in the plywood? I read or saw on tv years ago that shutters are to protect against flying debris, not air pressure. Seems that some had the wood against the window close enough to make a seal. When the wind got bad enough the wood would bend enough to create an over pressure -enough to pop the window inwards. A couple of holes in the wood would have let the air escape thus saving the window. Does anyone know if this is true?
When we save up enough to build a house from the ground up we're gonna use a lot of glass block.
I <3 tubular skylights.

Lots of board games? What do kids these days like to do when the power goes out?
You don't want "Daddy taught me how to play poker and black jack when that nasty storm came over!"
Fun with paper and pencil.
The game Battleship is a guessing game played by two people. Although popularized in the United States as a commercial board game, first published in 1931 by the Starex Novelty Company of New York under the name of "Salvo", it is known throughout the world as a pencil and paper game and predates World War I in this form. It was published by Milton Bradley Company in 1943 as the pad-and-pencil game "Broadsides, the Game of Naval Strategy".[1]

Can we get an idea of who is where, exactly?
I'd love to be able to know who to worry about most.
And for post-storm looting of course.
