This is so cool!

http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,128 … _tophead_2

I want one!

You ever watch people watching TV?  It's like watching zombies.
Really scary, actually.  Very little reaction, just kinda an alpha wave,
pseudo-hypnotic trance.

Re: This is so cool!

I don't see the point of that.  And, if it's so much a part of the landscape here and we're all zombies, then would we be MORE likely to notice its absence as our dependance is so complete?

Re: This is so cool!

It reminds me of that scene in Grumpy Old Men when the one guy sat down to catch the lottery results and the other guy kept switching the channel from across the yard.

I don't think I'd want to walk through my neighborhood and turn off TVs (that's just rude), but it would be great at some of the places mentioned like the gym, laundromat, pizza parlor, etc.

Actually you know I always want to turn off the TV at the VW dealer when I'm waiting on my car because I always bring a magazine or something to read and the TV is distracting.  The problem is that other people are watching the TV and I don't want to blatantly walk across the room and flick it off.  However, if I could do it without anyone noticing....

Re: This is so cool!

I wouldn't mind kicking the inventor of this thing in the nutz. Not for the device itself, but because of why he created. If it were just something to be kind of mischevious about, then I wouldn't mind.

But I can't fucking stand other people who want to save us from ourselves. Butt the fuck out and leave me alone you goddamn busybody. I neither want nor respect your opinion. Now shut up, my program is about to start.

Re: This is so cool!

I will be working on a mute button for smug, self important speudo-intellectuals who can't wait to bloviate to others how they hate TV and "don't even OWN a TV".

I plan to call it the "Pompous Pretentious Jackass B Silent".

It may also work on people who feel compelled to remind smokers that "smoking is soooo bad for you".

If people wish to watch TV while waiting in an airport lounge, or at the laundrette, who are others to come riding to the "rescue"?  It's not as though TVs shackle all who try and pass, forcing them to watch mind numbing "reality" shows.  If you don't like TV, do not watch it.

I realize that many people watch far too much TV; and that a great deal of it is simply bubble gum for the mind, but to annoint one's self the arbiter of what people can do with their time is a bit much.

After all, what kind of interesting conversation are you missing with the person sitting at the bar watching "American Idol" anyway?

Re: This is so cool!

It's funny, we have a society where confrontation is basically outlawed,
because physical "violence" is considered way out of bounds - even to
the point when shoving a news photographer when he/she is being extremely
rude leads to lawsuits and jail!

So, all around us is the growing feeling of complete helplessness,
and someone comes along and gives us a device that if, just for a moment,
makes us feel like we could actually be in control again, and cause a little
bit of of civil disobedience, and you around here actually complain about it!

This device is simply the result (effect, not cause), of a huge amount of
intrusion of NOISE that we have no power to turn off.  Yeah, it overdoes
it.  But I also noticed that every single one of you complainers around here
missed the fact that the device also turns ON any TV too.

Lighten up!

If you actually knew how remote controls worked then you would know that the inventor could not have designed a device that only turns TVs off.

The fact that the remote can turn on TVs is a side effect of the technology, not a feature the inventor put in.

And the fact that the subject of my sentence was "complainers missed",
not "remote was designed with" led you to reply this way....why?

Hostile, you have the tendency to followup and reply something counter,
or superior in posts talking about technology.  Were you aware of this?

Re: This is so cool!

Pay attention to what I said earlier. I'm not railing against the device itself. Just agains the guy's motivation for creating it.

I did not miss that fact.  That fact was simply irrelevant given that it was a side effect, the same button turns the TV of and on.

Much like Chris, the device itself while somewhat rude and annyoing was not so much the subject of my irritation as the attitude behind the invention.

I dislike the idea this guy seems to have that his opinion is not only right, but so much so that he should make the choice for others.

I suppose I just do not find anything particularly clever or revolutionary about turning off the TV while somebody is watching and saying you just "saved them several minutes of [their] life".  (talk about smug elitist bullshit)  While it was a different incident, what was harming the person in the video store about watching the baseball playoffs?

Well, he is most likely smarter than the TV watchers; after all, he doesn't even own one.
