Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

First, a little background.  I work in the Litigation Technology Support department, basically we support all the law applications that our attorneys use, work on trials, manage all the case-specific data on our network, and dozens of other things that don't come immediately to mind.

Earlier in the year our NoVA (Tyson's Corner) office was closed due to lack of business and the attorneys and staff were brought back here to the DC office.  Well, they haven't been able to lease that space out so, they are leasing out a floor of our building downtown and moving some of us out to Tysons.

What does that mean for me?  Well, NO MORE METRO!!!  I hate riding the fucking metro everyday and now I can :rally: to work, something I haven't been able to do since I started working after college.

I'm so stoked.  For some moronic reason the moves are taking place between Christmas and New Years.    They are having to shuffle a lot off people around because we also have a floor of office space down on M St and that is going to be leased out beginning Jan 2005 so all the people that are still down there will be moved up here or out to Tysons.

Yay for me!

A big "FUCK YOU" to METRO!!! KISS MY ASS!!!  :neener:  :wedgie:  :ninja:  :trixie:

Re: Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

You'd rather fight Tyson's traffic than ride Metro?  I used to love being able to take the rail downtown rather than fight New York Ave and I-395.  Plus, it was a hell of a lot easier to find parking at New Carrollton vs. downtown.  To each his own I guess...

Good for you!  I hate public transportation.  We had an "offsite" meeting in DC at the spy museum and had to take the metro - EW dirty nasty people!

Hell yes.  I live in Fairfax, it'll take me 30-45 minutes to get to Tysons.  Also, I currently ride a shuttle bus to and from my apartment to the Vienna metro.  It's not bad in the morning (when it's on time) but in the evening it sucks because I get stuck waiting.  My 1:30 (each way) commute is going to turn into 30-45 minutes.

Re: Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

Nice!  I rolled off that project in DC so I'm done with the Metro for now, at least.  I definitely understand your excitement.

It can be nice to sit back and enjoy the ride vs fighting traffic, but it takes so damn long and if you have to depend on shuttles, it's a pain in the ass.  I don't miss it.  I really prefer to drive out of my way to Fairfax than drive to the Metro and then ride into the city.  Fortunately I don't even go to Fairfax that often and am working from home right now.  smile

I dunno if I could work from home, too many distractions. What exactly do you do Chris?

I typically accomplish more when working from home for several reasons.

1. No commute, so I don't have to get up so fucking early = more energy throughout the day from not being so tired.  No commute home means I don't eat dinner and then immediately go to bed.
2. I work better when I have a TV or music playing softly in the background and I can't do either when I'm at a client site.
3. It's easier to schedule other things like a doctor's appt and work around it without totally screwing up the ENTIRE day.
4. More peace.  I don't work well at all when someone is breathing down the back of my neck.
5. I can attend teleconferences without hunting for a damn telephone.  (I have a LOT of teleconferences.)
6. I can have phone conversations without worrying who is listening.  This is a BIG issue when I'm at a client site and frequently causes me to put something off for later instead of just getting it done.

So there you go.  6 Reasons Chris is More Productive Working From Home.

BTW, I'm a Consultant.  I ... um... consult.  When you see commercials on TV about "e-Business on Demand" that's what I do.

Hi Chris. smile  I am curious, seeing as I work for a company with a $3b/yr contract with IBM, what kind of projects you actually work on.  Not that I'm doubting your consulting prowess, but I'd like an example or two of things you (or your team) really do.

"e-Business on demand" is pretty darn vague....

Re: Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

Well I can't publicly talk about specific projects.  But I'm in the Public Sector Supply Chain Management group.  So what that means is my clients are mostly federal agencies but could also be state and local governments, educational institutions, or healthcare providers.  When they need IT solutions to improve anything relating to their supply chain (logistics, product lifecycle, asset management, ERP, and more) we do that for them.  There are other groups for non-SCM contracts and then a whole other division for Private Sector, but this is what I do.

Nobody ever understands what I do so I always ask "You know those commercials on TV that advertise 'eBusiness on Demand?"  And they say yes.  So I say "Good, that's what I do."  Haha big_smile

Re: Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

Yeah, see, that's what I'm wondering, too.  I am slightly in doubt that Chris is making code changes to ERP software to customize it for Big Blue's clients.  I could very easily be wrong, but since I do roughly the same thing for my company and after five years still don't have a complete understanding of our systems (which include SAP, EXE, Icon, Oracle, and a bunch of heavy-duty homegrown apps), I don't see what a newbie consultant could do.

I don't mean any offense to you, Chris, but I would be skeptical if a recent grad walked into my office and told me how my company could improve it's SCM or ERP software, especially if they didn't have any understanding of my company's existing (usually highlycustomized) solution.  Now, if you're working on multi-year IBM contracts that already have an existing consultant base, it's a lot different....

Btw, if you ever have to spend some time in RTP, let me know and we can get together. smile

Re: Yay! No more commute into DC and no more Metro!!!

We do whatever we have to do to accomplish the client's goals.  That might include server setup but I have yet to actually do that.  SCM is about processes so we're typically software-based, but if they need the hardware too we can certainly provide it.  If it's an off the shelf product, we tailor it to their needs.  If it's custom, then we work with our Apps groups for that.  Another big part of our contracts is user training and post-implementation support.

Other groups do different things.  We have some big retail clients so think about all the systems necessary to run a huge retail store and that's what those groups do.

Basically clients come to us when they know they need something but don't know what that something is.  Or they know what they want but don't know how to achieve it.  And some just have more money than time and resources.  big_smile

I don't sell anything.  We have a sales group that does that and then my group comes in and actually does the work.  The only thing we sell is follow-on work upon the completion of a project.

OK.  smile   I have no idea if I'll ever get there, but we'll see.  I guess one good thing about consulting is that if you don't like something, just wait a few months and it will change.
