The Toronto Star actually tells you they're doing it to collect info on the kind of people who use their service.
What's really stupid is that you can put in any bogus email address like aiuklahsdf@kjosdhaskdf.net and your problem is solved (but don't use that one, I already have it).

I normally use something simple like nobody@noserver.com or if I'm feeling more creative, freeblowjobs@yomamas.com.

Yes, and it rocks.
I have only once found a site that BugMeNot didn't already have a registration for, and it's cool that when you create one it automatically gets uploaded to the BugMeNot database. Brilliant idea!
