XM radio to launch Walkman-style 'wearable' device

XM radio seen launching 'wearable' device-analyst

LOS ANGELES, Oct 21 (Reuters) - XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc next week is expected to unveil a "wearable" device, marking the satellite radio industry leader's latest effort to woo audiences to the nascent format, analysts said.

A spokesman for Washington, D.C.-based XM declined to comment beyond saying a major product announcement was planned for Oct. 26 in New York with automotive parts and consumer electronics products maker, Delphi Corp.

"XMSR is also likely to announce its wearable device next week. There is a good shot this 'Walkman' type device, in the near term, will differentiate XM's hardware from Sirius," a rival satellite radio system, said Kit Spring, analyst with Stifel, Nicolaus in a note for investors.

He said such a device would "also get investors thinking about future combinations of IPOD/TIVO-like satellite radios, which would increase the value of the monthly subscription."

A radio industry executive said the device was believed to be a satellite-radio receiver with headphones that also had a hard drive enabling users to download XM content.

Spring could not be immediately reached for comment.

Delphi has already partnered with XM for such products as the XM SKYFi satellite radio. Since introducing it in 2002, the company has shipped over 750,000 of the portable units.

XM rival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc has said it expects to roll out wearable products in late summer 2005.

The new "wearable device" by XM could bolster increasing investor sentiment about the business prospects for satellite radio, although some analysts cautioned that both rivals are investing heavily in a bid to attract a mass audience.

Earlier this month, Sirius reached a five-year, $500 million deal with shock jock Howard Stern to bring his popular program to the company's line-up in a bid to narrow the gap with XM.

XM responded this week by signing a $650 million deal to broadcast Major League Baseball games for 11 years.

XM Satellite has about 2.5 million subscribers. Sirius' subscriber base has exceeded 700,000 and the company said it remains on track for 1 million subscribers by the end of the year.

I think this is a terrific idea - watch out iPod.

This is brilliance.  Give the XM "Walkman" a slot for flash memory and start selling people cheap content on the go!   Better still, put a 10-20gb hdd in it so they'll have their choice of listening material.  Triply good would be a quality line out so it could be plugged into a home stereo (other than the XM boombox thingie).

Thank you.  I was just trying to think of what would be necessary for me to buy it.  I could deal without the harddrive, but it'd be a no-sale without the memory slot.

Re: XM radio to launch Walkman-style 'wearable' device

I was seriously considering getting either an XM or Sirius system but I don't think its worth it for me now. My commute to work is all of 25-30 minutes and I carpool with a coworker so I'm only using my car 2 to 3 times per week. If I could use the boombox attachment at my office it would be worth it, but my office faces due east. Other guys up and down my hallway have tried to bring theirs' in, but we can't get any signal from our side of the building. The only offices that can get signal are on the south side.

Its a neat technology and all, but I think it would be a complete waste for me. Disappointing too because I would love to be able to find some sort of medium to find new music beyond the Clear Channel monopoly. :thumbdow:

apples and oranges.

Agreed.  But if you combine an iPod with a satellite receiver (essentially, I think that's what bigelliot suggested) that would be interesting.

Normally I'm against the convergence of devices, but most multifunctions try to combine two different devices into one.  Combining two devices who's sole purposes are to play music would actually work.

Re: XM radio to launch Walkman-style 'wearable' device

There are a lot of people who don't want to mess with transferring everything over to an iPod or don't have developed enough collections who, imo, would like this device, with or without a hd or memory slot.

For me....

iPod + XM + MP3 recording = BUY IT!

That would be awesome. Imagine being able to schedule recordings of particular shows in a Tivo-like fashion...
