I don't know why people tend to pick 3, but I think its similar to the following (don't scroll down too quickly):
Begin counting out loud with increasing digits, where every digit is "5"
1 digit: 5
2 digits: 55
3 digits: 555
But actually count out loud, speaking: five,... fifty-five,... five hundred and fifty-five.... until you're up around 5 or 6 digits
